i) The Government of Nova Scotia recently introduced accessibility legislation. An Act Respecting Accessibility in Nova Scotia was introduced on November 2, 2016. The Act sets a framework for the government to work with communities, businesses and non-profit organizations to create accessibility standards. It is expected that the Government will implement the Act in phases and consult with the disabled and business communities in developing the legislation further.
ii) The Construction Projects Regulation under the Occupational Health and Safety Act in Ontario will be amended as of January 1, 2017. The key amendments include: a new reporting structure to the Ministry of Labour when suspended access equipment is installed for the first time at a project site; mandatory training requirements for workers using suspended access equipment; requirements with respect to inspection, testing and maintenance of suspended access equipment; and improvement of design and engineering requirements for suspended access equipment.
