1) The Government of Manitoba is launching a public consultation with respect to the employment standard under the Accessibility for Manitobans Act. The employment standard will apply to all organizations and businesses in Manitoba with at least one employee. The employment standard is the second of five accessibility standards being developed under the Accessibility for Manitobans Act.
2) On January 1, 2017, amendments to the Employment Insurance Act will come into effect that will reduce the waiting period for employment insurance benefits from two (2) weeks to one (1) week.
3) Changes to the Terms and Conditions of Employment in Defined Industries – Automobile Manufacturing, Automobile Parts Manufacturing, Automobile Parts Warehousing and Automobile Marshaling regulation under the Employment Standards Act, 2000 will come into effect on January 1, 2017. The amendments will extend personal emergency leave to employees in the automobile sector. The amendments provide that employees, whose employer regularly employs 50 or more employees, will be entitled to up to seven (7) days of personal emergency leave per calendar year. The amendments further provide that employees will be entitled to an unpaid leave of absence of up to three days, because of the death of a prescribed individual.
