i) The Government of Manitoba has begun a comprehensive review of the Worker’s Compensation Act. A committee has been formed to review the legislation to ensure it continues to meet the needs of workers and employers. The last major review of the Act occurred in 2005.
ii) The Government of Ontario has released additional details about the Ontario Retirement Pension Plan (“ORPP”). The ORPP will be implemented in three phases between January 1, 2018 and January 1, 2020, depending on the size of the organization and whether the organization’s pension plan meets the “comparability test” (i.e. that the current plan is comparable to the benefits provided by the ORPP). By January 1, 2020, the ORPP will be mandatory for every eligible worker in Ontario who is not covered by a comparable workplace pension plan.
