It has been reported that the ruling African National Congress says the implementation of a national minimum wage is imminent, with only the actual amount of wage being the source of disagreement between parties at the National Economic Development and Labour Council. Presently, South Africa has no national minimum wage. Under powers granted to the Minister of Labour under amendments to the Basic Conditions of Employment Act 75 of 1997, published in December 2013, the Minister will in future be able to publish a sectoral determination to cover all employers and employees who are not covered by any other sectoral determination, which might be used to effectively legislate a national minimum wage.
