A private members bill has been tabled in Parliament, which contains a proposal to amend the current Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA) to afford 10 days of paid parental leave to employees (either male or female) on the birth of their child or in the case of adoption or surrogacy. Currently, the BCEA only makes provision for maternity leave for female employees and very limited paternity leave (as part of family responsibility leave, which is only 3 days per annum) and does not provide for adoption or surrogacy leave. The proposed amendment is also aimed at catering for parental leave for same-sex parents.
