Industrial action is permitted, however before any form of action is taken, the majority of members affected must have agreed to it by means of a secret ballot. Strike action is prohibited for the three essential services of water, gas and electricity. For other essential services, a strike is prohibited unless 14 days prior notice is given of any strike.
In Singapore, the government takes a serious stand in relation to industrial action as it will damage the reputation of the country. In this regard, the largest trade union in Singapore, the National Trades Union Congress, has always enjoyed a close working relationship with the government and employers so as to create a harmonious work environment to protect the interests of the workers under its various divisions/ subsidiary trade unions. As a result, labor disputes between the trade unions and employers are relatively rare.
