Authorizations for Foreign Employees in Italy

1. Requirements for Foreign Employees to Work

There are no specific rules related to the employment of European Union (“EU”) citizens as they can move and work in every EU Country without limitation.

On the other hand, limitations are provided by the law with respect to non-EU citizens. Visas and different work permits are necessary in the following situations:

  1. Hiring of non-EU citizens: After the annual quotas are established, a non-EU citizen must request a work visa, assuming that they have been offered employment in Italy.
  2. Secondment in Italy of non-EU citizens: Must be activated on the basis of a special and more simplified procedure strictly related to the purposes of the secondment in Italy.
